Underclass 7: Excerpt Three

“When I was made redundant, I turned to alcohol as you all know and that’s when my life really took a turn for the worst. Rena and I would argue everyday until one night, when I was drunk out of my skull, I hit her. And I didn’t just hit her once. I kept hitting her until her features were no longer visible anymore. That’s when she left me and took baby Milly-Anne with her. I refused to get a job because I was convinced the world was against me. I managed to get over my drink addiction, but after all the attention surrounding the assault and the custody battle, there was no chance of me finding decent work again. Now, I’m this twenty-seven-year-old bum. Still young, but with no aspirations,”
